We’re going on vacation.

OK, not exactly. We’re going to an out-of-town wedding and there might be a little time to explore the city, so I’m looking at it as a vacation.

I’m a little worried about the four-hour drive ahead of us (Baby Bird’s longest trip was the one we took to Idlewild), but I’m petrified about the hotel stay.

My kid isn’t the greatest sleeper at home (and yes, I’m still watching her during the night), so I’m understandably afraid of what we’ll have to endure when she’s in a new place and bed.

I’m hoping to fight half the battle by buying her a toddler travel bed and getting her used to sleeping in it.

Yes, hotel’s have cribs, but my fear of other people’s germs won’t let me put my kid in one. I don’t think she’ll be ready for a rollaway bed or to sleep alone on a queen mattress. And letting her into the bed with us IS NOT AN OPTION. This is what that would look like:

So after weeks of research, I’ve narrowed the list of the best toddler travel beds down to these five.

Pack ‘N Play: Technically, this isn’t a toddler travel bed, but it’s an option that should be considered if you already own a PNP. We have a Graco and haven’t had any problems with it, but Baby Bird could be too long for it by the time we leave.

Regalo My Cot: This Amazon bestseller has received some pretty awesome reviews. It’s said to be durable and simple to set up, but I’m not sure it’s right for wild sleepers like my kid. (Baby Bird flops around in her sleep like a dying fish.) There’s no bumper or raised sides to keep Little One in place, so I’d be concerned about the cot tipping over.

Leachco BumpZZZ: This is a lightweight, padded bed that’s pretty large (58 inches long, 39 inches wide, and 7 inches deep), so you could get a few years’ use from it. It has raised sides, and the bed’s covering can be removed for easy cleaning. The downside: At $125, it’s much pricier than the other options.

The Shrunks inflatable bed: This is essentially an inflatable mattress (i.e., really durable) with raised sides. Those sides really matter for my active sleeper. Standard crib sheets can be used on it, and the bed is made of BpA-safe materials. So what’s the con? The bed would be on the floor, making it easy for Little One to climb out and go exploring. (In all fairness, Little One will be on the floor with most of these options.)

Intex Kidz Travel Bed: This inflatable bed fits into a separate frame, so it could easily be wrapped in a crib sheet or a standard-size one. The frame surrounds the mattress with a wall that’s about 10 inches high — perfect for floppers like Baby Bird. It’s compact enough for easy transport, and it’s about half the price of the LeachCo BumpZZZ. At the moment, this is my front-runner.
